Canoeing and Kayaking the Peace River Alaska Highway

Travel info for Peace River/Alaska Highway.

This region of British Columbia is as old as the dinosaurs, which once roamed this area. The First Nations people have called this part of the province home for over ten thousand years, while the Europeans first came to this region in the mid 1700's. This land known as the Peace River Alaska Highway is filled with history. But, the vast wilderness is what really attracts visitors, while the residence just take it for granted, it's part and parcel of the way they live. Here you will find some of the tallest mountains in the province. Carved from the mountains are deep valleys, alpine meadows, fish filled lakes and mighty rivers. And of course, true northern hospitality is an every
day occurrence.

The river systems in the Peace River Alaska Highway are vast, wild and adventurous, just like the region. A suitable paddling trip for even novices with moving water skills, is the Peace River, near Dawson Creek. If you wish to do the full trip, it's approximately 275 km on the river (165 mi.) and you should allow at least ten days or more from start to finish. There are some fast waters and because the river braids, you should have experience in reading waters. The Peace River has history, as it was the main route first taken by early explorers and fur traders as they made their way through the mountains and into B.C. The Peace is part of the Mackenzie system which makes its way to the Arctic. The valley of the Peace River is home to many large animals and is a winter sanctuary and feeding area.
