DESCRIPTION
-
A moderately large, robust fish, most
Smallmouth Bass are 8-15 inches long.
The colouring is variable with size, condition
and habitat but usually Smallmouth Bass
range from brown to olive or green on
the back with golden flecks.
DISTRIBUTION
- Smallmouth Bass occur in eastern British
Columbia in lakes of the Columbia River
system and on Saltspring Island and southern
Vancouver Island.
BIOLOGY
- The Smallmouth Bass spawns over a period
of 6-10 days in the late spring to early
summer. The male builds a nest and the
female lays approximately 7000 eggs per
pound of fish. The maximum age in Canada
is 15 years. Food includes insects, crayfish
and fishes.
RELATION
TO MAN - The Smallmouth Bass' attraction
for anglers and its sporting qualities
are almost legendary. The flesh is white,
flaky and delicious.
